Gwich'in Territorial Park- Vadzaih Van Tshik Campground

General Information

Vadzaih Van Tshik Campground is one of two campgrounds inside the Gwich'in Territorial Park. The campground offers modestly sized campsites, with basic amenities including outhouse washrooms and picnic areas. The campground is well protected from the weather, conveniently nestled near a steep embankment, in the oxbow of Caribou Creek (Vadzaih means Caribou in Gwich'in).

Vadzaih Van Tshik Campground in Gwich’in Territorial Park is located 50 km south of Inuvik. Travelling north from the NWT/Yukon border along NWT Hwy 8 (km 221) the route to the park includes two seasonal ferry crossings.

Hamlet of Tsiigehtchic. Located where the Arctic Red and Mackenzie Rivers meet, Tsiigehtchic (meaning mouth of Iron River) is home to fewer than 200 people.

Park Highlights

Vadzaih Van Tshik Campground is a small, quiet campground designed to accommodate only modestly sized RVs (20 ft or smaller). The park offers many opportunities for birdwatching, along the cliffs of Caribou Creek watch for birds of prey taking flight or marvel at kingfishers darting over the surface of the lake. Peregrine falcons may also be spotted nesting in the area.

Safety Information
Avoid attracting wild animals to your campsite. Do not feed animals, and keep food, food waste, and anything else with a scent in a vehicle, hard-sided trailer, or bear-proof canister. Keep sites clean and dispose of garbage in designated receptacles. Please inform park staff of wildlife sightings/encounters in the park.

Grizzly bears are occasionally seen in Gwich'in Territorial Park. If you encounter a bear, remember the 3 S's - Stop, Stand still, Stay calm. Get more info on staying safe in grizzly country.
