NWT Parks History

Northwest Territories Parks was established in 1972 to conserve natural ecosystems and protect areas with cultural and historical significance.

Today there are thirty-five parks and historic sites spread across 300 square kilometres of pristine remote wilderness, managed and maintained by five culturally significant regional districts in the Territory.
Our commitment to collective regional management ensures cultural representation in parks planning and decision making with the people indigenous to the areas. The result is stunning parks that are unique to each region, where visitors can enjoy exceptional recreation facilities, campgrounds, and day use areas with breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and culture.

Tourism in the Northwest Territories is a celebration of both natural wonders and cultural richness. Here, you’ll find a sanctuary for health, recreation, and relaxation, offering a wealth of opportunities to connect with nature and recharge. From hiking through rugged terrains and paddling on serene lakes to observing the northern wildlife in their natural habitat, our parks cater to every outdoor enthusiast’s dream.
