Alexandra Falls Day Use Area

General Information

Alexandra Falls is the first NWT Parks stop along Highway 1 after entering the Northwest Territories. There are picnic tables, and a large pull through parking area.  At the park entrance map displays show the trails in the area and how to find the lookouts to watch the falls drop a dramatic 32 metres over a limestone ridge There are two viewing platforms located a short walk away or visitors can stroll the boardwalk beside the Hay River Gorge to Louise Falls or go further on to Escarpment Creek

Hay River. Known as the Hub of the North, the town of Hay River is surrounded by boreal forests, rivers, kilometres of beaches along the Great Slave Lake, making it the perfect base for an outdoor adventure.

Park Highlights

32-foot waterfalls. Geology, explore the top of Alexandra Falls and find the Devonian Fish Trackway, which is a series of fossilized impressions marking an ancient animal’s passage through the mud. The impressions were made 350 to 375 million years ago by a Sarcopterygian fish also know as the “walking fish”. The day use area has a large pull-through parking lot that can accommodate vehicles pulling trailers.

Louise Falls, the twin falls in Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park, is just a three-kilometre hike away. Escarpment Creek, a deep gorge with an attractive series of small waterfalls, is also close by.

Safety information
In the off season the trails are only periodically groomed. There are many natural hazards within the Twin Falls Gorge Territorial Park (unstable cliffs, uneven surfaces, dangerous currents, slippery surfaces). Please exercise caution while enjoying this Territorial Park.
