Nearby attractions
The Papal Grounds, also known as The Flats, is part of the Edhaa National Historic Site, and is located near the junction of the Mackenzie and Liard Rivers and across from the Fort Simpson Territorial Park campground. It is home to the world's tallest wooden teepee structure (15 metres), built by the hit reality TV show Timber Kings.
The area is also a timeless gathering place for the Dene and Metis people, who would stop and congregate there to trade, settle disputes, and undertake ceremonies of healing and giving thanks. Many summer events are hosted there, such as National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21), Canada Day (July 1) and Open Sky Festival.
