Due to COVID-19 campgrounds and online reservation system opening will be postponed until further notice

May 14, 2020

The Government of the Northwest Territories is postponing the opening of Parks campgrounds and the reservation system this year to support national efforts to reduce the spread of COVID-19. We will be monitoring the COVID-19 situation closely and will adjust parks opening dates accordingly.

We know that families are excited to get out and enjoy camping in the NWT and this decision was not made lightly. The health and safety of our staff and visitors is our priority.

Please review the Q&A below and reach out to parks@gov.nt.ca
with any additional questions.

Q&A:

With the extended stay draw cancelled, are there other ways that I can still reserve a campsite for a long-term stay?

At this time, you will not be able to reserve a campsite either for a long-term or short-term stay. We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and will adjust to the changing circumstances. We will share updates as they become available.

Why is the opening of parks delayed? Can’t I practice physical distancing from a campsite?

While we would like to offer these amenities to residents and encourage families to get outside, it creates an added risk for our parks staff who would need to work together, patrol the sites, interact with a large volume of guests and provide site maintenance. The health and safety of our staff and guests is our top priority. This decision is consistent with Parks Canada, which closed their facilities on March 25 until further notice.

Even though the parks are closed, can I still use park facilities?

Camping within NWT Parks while they are closed is not permitted. Renting of facilities such as kitchen shelters will not be available until further notice. Trails and some outhouses are accessible, however, if waste and litter pose a health risk to users and maintenance crews then this will be reviewed and may change.

Will the online reservation system open in April?

The online reservation system will not be available until further notice. Due to postponement of the opening of park campgrounds, we will be delaying the launch of the Parks Reservation System (NWTParks.ca). Once a date has been confirmed for the opening of the NWT Parks and the Parks Reservation System, we will be sure to communicate this to our users.
